Record by record, the spiritual journey of Merciful Nuns is becoming deeper and deeper, and the music fits perfectly with it. This is the first part of two, GOETIA IV and GOETIA V. Artaud Seth and his Merciful Nuns have, in a very short space of time, climbed back to the heights of Goth Rock heyday. Already onto the band's forth full length release with three EPs and a live album in the discography, Seth isn't hanging about in projecting his musical and philosophical vision to the world any more. But is this a case of rushing in where angels fear to tread? With the opener ‘Ars Goetia' slowly stirring into life and projecting a still, emptiness with great power it is immediately evident that this isn't the case. The band craft atmosphere around a solid rock core with ease and show that even the more progressive inclinations they have are well within their comfort zone. There are plenty of standout songs on display here with ‘The Nazarene', ‘Temple At The Dome Of the Rock', ‘Kybalion', and the single ‘Genesis Revealed' in particular harking back to the effective gothic rock of Seth's early career, showing why Merciful Nuns is billed as GOD's only legitimate successor. One of the most notable points with any Merciful Nuns release though is the steady improvement in the production and mixes. Despite their fast schedule the album has been given plenty of time in order to get the right balance of sounds. Confidence has never been an issue for Seth and his cohorts, but Merciful Nuns still get stronger with every release. ‘Goetia IV' continues to walk the fine line between gothic rock and ambient atmospherics while still keeping to an impressively trim musical formula. There is no excess, just good song writing.

The Underworld, a place of fear, segmented into nine planes and ruled by 21 Lords. Artaud Seth, Jawa Seth and Jon take us on a descent into this unreal world. Completely unphased by trends and inclination for ingratiation to the listener Artaud Seth in his role as mastermind behind the Merciful Nuns continues to traverse his chosen musical path. Traditional Gothic Rock produced brilliantly not only in the context of present demands but quite simply seminal for timeless great music. Goth as a mixture of widescreen epic and massive walls of guitar sound, sacred choir chants, rattling drum computer and Artaud's sepulchral voice permeating through every fibre of one's body, at times plunging its intrinsic despair deep into the heart of the listener. And yet, even this does not adequately describe the musical workings of the NUNS. The primary objective is to ensure the survival of the Goth-Rock spirit of the 80's and early 90's into the modern era; to not only recollect the sound but also from a lyrical perspective, to recall the origins of Gothic culture. Hence we find in 'Xibalba III' mythological themes in the foreground. Where do we come from? How long have we been occupying this Earth? Is there such a thing as Gods from outer space? Such questions and more await the listener. The Nuns have already attained cult status and must be regarded as seminal for intelligent listening pleasure!

Returning from the core of the Underworld, "Hypogeum (II)" hits straighter and darker than ever before imagined by offering you another brainwashing journey into the forgotten fields of the Megalithic culture. "Hypogeum (II)" is without any doubt the album destined to be seated forever on the throne of classic dark GOTH. An album to please the elder gods with real dark pearls, almost every part of it appears to be intend on generating a more intense atmosphere. When listening to the album you feel like being in a movie theatre. Could it be that there was once a single, highly-advanced group of men that virtually kick-started the world. After the very good success of LIB.1 and the accompanying ‘BODY OF LIGHT EP’, ex-Garden of Delight, ex-Lutherion MERCIFUL NUNS succeed to deliver a follow-up, that convinces from first listening.

For Artaud Seth, the final stop of legendary GARDEN OF DELIGHT didn't mean the end of his career. Three years after the last regular Garden Of Delight album Seth is back with a new album called "LIB.1" out on the Solar Lodge label. The album was released already on March 31st 2010 for the first time. ‘LIB.1’ is a revisiting of the sound of the eighties and early nineties. Pure, retro Goth!" as the band calls it. They didn`t have the intension to do something completely new. They didn´t reveal another future sound. You like the Sisters, you`ll love the Nuns. Simple, ironical, dark. Just tunes of a long forgotten time of very intense music!

Currently no other band celebrates authentic Goth like MERCIFUL NUNS. Those fortunate enough to have experienced a gig of the band featuring the Master of Ceremonies Artaud will remain captivated by the aura surrounding this band for all time. Merciful Nuns are nothing less than a revelation in music and will possibly remain unsurpassed for the foreseeable future. Whether it be "Genesis Revealed", a virtuous mid-tempo song which develops into a driven Goth smash hit, or "Enlightenment" with its strong focus on rhythm, or indeed the atmospheric ballad "All days are black" - Merciful Nuns effortlessly command every aspect of this genre and continue to surpass themselves each and every time. Traditional Goth Rock brilliantly produced not only in line with the high demands of the present time but seminal timeless great music. Goth between wide screen epic massive guitar driven walls of sound, sacral choirs, rattling drum computers and the unique low timbre of Artaud's distinctive voice, in which all the pain and despair of a suffering existence seems to fractionize. "Genesis Revealed" marks another milestone in the history of Goth - it's about time to crystallize the reverence the Merciful Nuns deserve.

Merciful Nuns have quickly made a name for themselves over the past year. Their successful debut album 'Lib I' and its follow up 'Hypogeum II' returned to the mystical, haunting anthems of the early Garden Of Delight sound (to the joy of a legion of followers!). Now the band's new EP 'Ancient Astronauts' looks to capitalise on this momentum with another collection of modern Gothic rock anthems inspired by the mysteries of the Megalithic culture. Merciful Nuns have crafted another great EP here that fans of classic Gothic rock can get their teeth into. The modern production does a lot more for the band's sound and better reflects the tightness of their performance.
